If you are a struggling songwriter or musician, then you have come to the right place. Let me guess, your only goal right now is none other than to figure out how to write a hit song! It is no hidden secret that the music business is a tough cookie to bite into but if you can get that hit song out there then you are on your way.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be the most fantastic music composer or even the world’s most superb singer. It’s the words to the song that has to catch people’s ears. I mean think about all the songs that have been hits over the last year to start. Let’s see, “Don’t forget about it,” Mariah Carey, “Laffy Taffy,” D4L, “You’re Beautiful,” James Blunt, “So Sick,” Ne-Yo, “Do I Make You Proud,” Taylor Hicks and the list goes on…Although it doesn’t seem possible, there is a common thread that connects these songs.
All of these songs are human and personable. Some of them are silly and some serious but it boils down to the fact that people can relate to them. Sure there are crucial step-by-step elements to writing a song such as, melody, harmony, and chord progression but often lyrics are what grab people, what stick in their heads.
Reflect on why you like your favorite songs. They must evoke some sort of feelings for you. Do you feel nostalgic, happy, pumped up or even a bit glum with a few of them? All in all, you love them because you can relate to them. It is important to put a personal touch to songs that you write because we are all human and have experienced similar life experiences.
On the path to learning how to write a hit song you must learn to write what you are passionate about no matter what genre of music. Jilted lovers, funny stories, rites of passage, first timers or even politics, if you dare, all make for great material. And the material is right there in front of your face. Take it from your life experiences or those of others, the stories you have heard. Take a walk down the street and you will find it all over the place.
After you implement some of these ideas into your brainstorming routine and you still feel as if you will never figure out how to write a hit song then try a change of scenery. Go to Starbucks, Barnes and Noble or the mall. Take a pad of paper and jot down ideas as they come along.
Lastly, listen to all different genres of music, even if you don’t like them. You never really know what may cause the bulb to spark. As a songwriter, you need to have a vast appreciation and growing knowledge of the music all around you. And really, what’s the worst that could happen? If nothing else, you will have a better idea who the competition is.
